A bunch of Polish kids experimenting with carbide, blowing up metal containers and sending them sky high.

WOW! That looks like fun. If I'd have known you could do that with carbide gas I probably wouldn't be here today.
Lets see now, if I take the neighbors garbage can, and poke a tiny hole in the bottom. Then duct tape his cat to the --- hmmmmmm! |

| Friends of my brother were playing with carbide several years ago, and they used to put them in the tailpipe of a car and light them on fire... well one day they put in too much, causing the gas tank to explode, and shrapnel fly everywhere. one kid got killed, another lost his leg.... |

Karl, the gas is acetylene. When water is dripped on calcium carbide it produces acetylene gas, the same gas that was used by spelunkers and in miners lamps. Acetylene is a sooty burning gas that is extremely flammable and can become highly explosive at low pressures. Used in acetylene torches it has low safety pressure level of around 15 Psi. Much above 20 Psi it will explode violently with a very sharp crack. |
