I think private owners of historic race cars shouldn't be allowed to drive them. This is even more shameful if it was a professional driver! |

Not in narrow side streets. There are places do that and that's not one of them. A waste for sure! |

In reading the above comments I see there is a lot of misunderstanding regarding the classic car race that is a common (but not seriously competitive) event put on as entertainment for the race crowds and the car owners own fun.
For instance as to the comment of seagal: "I think private owners of historic race cars shouldn't be allowed to drive them."
Ans: That's very Berkley of you. These cars are privately owned, restored at tremendous labor & expense by owners that do it strictly for the love of it. Most of these cars were in much worse condition before restoration then they were after the accident. I for one think that I should be able to do with my property as I see fit without Stalin-like governmental types telling me what I can or cannot do for the "peoples sake." I believe Russia already proved what a wonderful success that was.
Istrex commented: lets face it they aren't really suitable for racing, are they?
Ans: They were the cream of the crop in their time, and they're not really 'supposed' to be racing, although the Jag was passing a much older car when he went into the wall.
CCat sez: put a f___ing seat belt in it dumb ass.
Ans: Mitch, I am one of the original promoters of seat belts. Before they were made mandatory for race cars, back when if you wanted seat belts you either had to salvage harnesses war surplus from aircraft, or go to a Saab dealer. However; that approximately 1925 vintage boat-tail roadster would have rolled over and crushed anyone belted onto it. I used the term 'onto' it deliberately as; there was as much driver sitting on top as there was inside the vehicle.

Right, so if some lucky (super rich) person got his hands on the Mazda 787b Le Mans car from 1991 (that sits in the head quarters of Mazda in Japan) and crashed it in a historic race/festival. Do you not think that is a pointless and complete waste of a car that enthusiasts, like myself and many others would really enjoy seeing running long into the future?
These days may well be for entertainment but smashing an old le mans jag into a wall is such an annoying waste. It's just like today went someone smashes a perfectly good rwd car becuase they think they can drift when in fact they are a complete knob.

You can't spoil the original appearance of an antique car as a roll bar was not original equipment however, In principal I agree. Seat belts are definitely not as confining as wheelchairs.
Believe it or not, the same session of legislature that made wearing seat belts in cars mandatory in Florida, eliminated the helmet requirement for bikers. It is working rather well, as we've been effectively culling the herd of bikers this last season. To quote boyjohn: "Nice!"

They probably reason that if they do crash the car, they might as well die in the process considering the maintenance cost |
