Actually Carl, the gasoline will not ignite But the vapors or fumes within certain range of concentrations will blow. I had a real close call with a cruiser we used to have when something (someone?) told me to check the engine compartment before starting. I'd gotten like most captains after running my boat daily to simply vent the bilges for five minutes before stating. It's just such a pain to pull up the carpet then lift the heavy damn hatches to make a visual and sniff test. I had gasoline squirting out of a loose fitting right over the engine. I never again took the easy way. SCARY!

I know mate, and there ought to be (apparently was) enough fumes in that there tank for it to ignite by just a spark

lol, well you aren't the only one i know of that had to do visual and sniffing test. According to witnesses, a buddy of mine had been standing motionless like a statue for 5-10 minutes and then shaking after a big blast and flameout had occured when starting.. Even after he fixed everything he still sniffed and looked around before turning the key. I believe he still does it as a ritual

	Mythbusters tried to ignite petrol vapors using a cellphone. Didn't work. They had an old phone with a long antenna on, and they stripped off all the plastic from the antenna so it was like a metal rod - didn't help. So it really is bollocks that mobile phones can blow up a petrol station.
