^^ if you know one Scandinavian language, can you pretty understand all of them? as in: is it similar to american english vs. british english vs. australian english etc.. or do you have to learn each separately?

Yeah, I thought so, but you can never know for sure. Down in Latvia and those lands they speak something like it, and it's a little bit confusing. Finnish isn't the language you hear being spoken everyday. It's rare.

Norwegians understand swedish and danish better than most danes and sweeds understand norwegian, but that's because Norway has been "in the middle" for a long time, and even shared mainlanguage with Denmark for some time. Even though old "norse" (as Tyr wrote about in another post a couple of days ago) always has been the main-norwegian, just that it has been pushed over the line for a period (now called "nynorsk". But none of us scandinavians really have TROUBLE understanding eachother, there's just some small differences.

I think the swedish language have similarities with both norwegian and finnish. It's like if it is old scandinavian (after all, scandinavians did speak ONE language in the very beginning) mixed with finnish. And norwegian is old scandinavian mixed with danish. And danish, well, they have something in there that comes from deutsch, I think. So actually it all makes sense.

Okey; I wrote alot of bullshit now, and that's because I'm fucking tired, and have a terrible headache.. Bai bai!

First of all, don't listen TOO much to the little norwegian boy over there lol ...

The Fins and their language originates from some unknown roots as far as i know. The schoolars have had a tough time trying to pinpoint where the fins came from in the beginning. Some say russia, some try to link them to the black sea somewhere, others points to the close yet not so close relationship with the people in Lappland in northern Finland/Sweden/Norway.. And even those people are hard to say where they came from as well, since there are a shortage of historical documents.

Most likely, the laps and fins came from the russian peninsula at some point in time. The typical looks of a fin and lapp is pretty much the same, with higher cheekbones and slightly slanty eyes, which can be found in siberia and such.

As for the rest of us "Germanian" descendants in scandinavia. The languages in Iceland/Faroe islands are the oldest preserved ones, and was pretty much the same language that was spoken all over scandinavia back in the days of the vikings... Since then, the languages/alphabet, much as every other in europe has changed slightly... The Latin, German, French languages perverted the scandinavian languages alot after the christians fucked things up during the middle ages, the hansa trade and all that stuff influenced mostly if memory serves me right.

Anyway, It's more of a dialect difference like you said. American, British, Scottish and so on.... There is a common saying in both Sweden and Norway that; Danish is like talking with a hot potatoe in your mouth

The languages are pretty damn hard to get a grip on i've been told. And only reason to learn any of them are probably if you have plans on moving to any of the countries, or work here... I would suggest a trip through the countries before deciding.

if only it weren't so god damn expensive to get over there, not to mention traveling across the countries. I imagine I'll have to get a job for a while before hand

Either way, Sweden and Norway are my two highest priority destinations after college. After watching this - http://visitnorway.com/MWTemplates/QWMultimed iaPage.aspx?id=197189 i don't know how they couldn't be..

on another note, did you ever find it strange that such a peaceful, mellow area of the world produces such brutally hard music?

I have no clue about the travel expenses, but as for prices on things over here, Norway is alot more expensive than Sweden. There's a whole lot of them coming over here to bunk up on items that cost twice as much on their own turf. They were wise to stay out of the European union, but on the other hand, things tend to cost more for them as a result.

http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=cb5_1183253828

The fjords in norway shouldn't be missed though

As for the brutal music, i think i can explain that one... I'm pretty convinced that it comes from how we are up here. Cultures and history makes for different mentalities in people.. And as for us scandinavans, the long winter months we are raised with up here must surely have affected us as well i think.

I think it makes people a little gloomy too; after all, it starts to darken around 2pm, and turns almost pitch black outside at 3pm this time of the year. That's why people outside of scandinavia percieve us as being colder and reserved, yet intelligent and mellow... While the warmer countries seem to produce some crazy fuckers that goes off over nothing, just look at bullit ... Anyway!!!... Most people don't analyze and try to understand things. The easiest way is just to dismiss people as being the way they are at a mere sight of them. Personally i believe there are explonations for everything... Cold weather = Calm people, Hot = Crazy... I guess you develop an analytic mind during the winter months as well

The summer is pretty much the other way around, and that time of the year nobody sits at home... Again, as opposed to the winter months, when we are pretty much sitting indoors. That's when you can expect all the creativity and crazy shit to emerge from the minds of people over here.

^^ that video was incredible. seems exactly like my kind of place, it's a shame about the language barriers though. i think it would drive me absolutely crazy to not have the words to express myself clearly.

as for the brutal music, i love it. i can certainly see and hear how all that darkness leaks over into the music. i've found that (good) metal often resembles classical and compositional styles, especially with a group like Opeth.

also, i can see how the cold weather would bring about calmer people. if you put a goldfish in colder water, its heart as well the rest of its body functions and movements slow down significantly to conserve energy, which seems to be true for most living things.

i imagine there's some unbelievable skiing over there too. just out of curiosity, how difficult is it to go across the boarders? going from the US to Canada you need to answer a few questions about your intentions and show some picture identification. they also search your car every so often, and if they find even a little bit of marijuana consider yourself toast.

Yeah the languages is always the most difficult part. Apart from personal linguistic skills, It seems as if it's harder or easier for some people to learn languages depending on where they come from. Some languages have this heavy accent that never really goes away when they're speaking another language, kind of like schwarzenegger

I love/loved metal since i wore dipers, and lately in life i've been totally hooked on classical music, especially beethoven. I have some tickets laying around here for a Mozart symphony on the 13th dec. And booked 3 more with my sisters for May next year with Beethovens ninth, the one symphny that i have to hear live, before they burn my carcass the heathen way.

Going over the borders here ?.. Just waltz over as you like. In sweden we have this thing called "Allemansrätten/All mans rights". Which means you can walk where ever you like, as you please. There's no fenced in private property where people can tell you to fuck off... If you live on one side of the country you can travel to the other and camp as you please, and put up a fire and so on.. The rule is just to use your common sense.. Put out the fire properly before you move on, don't litter, and be respectful to the land and the landowners wishes if they should pop by and say something.. As of yet i never been told or asked anything, usually it's just "Hi, and bye", if you see them at all which seldom happens... Other rules in the common sensed "Allemansrätten" - Don't start chopping down trees or anything like that.. If you need firewood, pick some from the ground, there should be plentiful... hmm what else. Well i think i covered it pretty well there... Fishing these days requires a fishing card that spans over an X amount of days or something like that, it's different in different places. And i haven't gone fishing in any lake now for years... Hunting of course requires a landowners permission though. As if it needs to be mentioned ..

Skiing is pretty top notch over here, the norwegians pretty much own in that sport. Though i believe the swizz guys have the creme de la creme of ski resorts. Im not to well travelled in the skiing parts to say, and i haven't been into skiing for years and years now. Where i live, it's been less and less snow during the years, and i never been the one to travel for the sake of skiing. Usually i tagged along just for the after ski parties which are pretty damn good i must say.

Hmmm... There's been a few incidents with germans who bought land and house here, and been grumpy because people walk around on their land and tried to prevent them with the "private property" bullshit... They're not used to how we have arranged things around here. There's always been this abuse of freedom amongst foreigners because they know they can complain as hell here, and nobody will tell them off. We're far to fucking leniant in that department, you give them a finger and they take the whole arm... And as far as i can tell other countries are fenced in as hell when it comes to freedom, so most people come here just to enjoy that.

Im not too sure about how the "All mans rights" apply in norway, denmark or finland, when it comes to camping, and fires and all that though.. All i know is that going over the borders is like passing over from one county to the next. I know your americans are always going on about freedom this and freedom that, and way of life... You might just be in for a little bit of a shock when you get over here though lol

Basically we have laws and rules for the well being of everyone. Such as the strict weapon laws, everyone have the right to get a hold of them, it just requires more from the person that wants one. Handguns for instance requires membership in a club for 1 year, and then you have to show you are able to use it properly, by means of safety, and shooting skills to prove you are motivated anough and not just getting one for the hell of it... rifles requires that you're an active athlete, or if you're going to hunt, you need to take a hunters exam. Which isn't that difficult, theory and practial saftey and shooting skills. I tihnk they started with that around 15 years ago.. Before that it was pretty much like in the states.. You applied for the gun you wanted and you got it, as long as you didn't have any previous jail term or the like, handguns were easier too... They changed all that as society turned uglier. "Thank you massimmigration of eastern folks" *cough*... It may be calm and peaceful countries in comparison to most, but most people here would testify that it's getting shittier by the day. And there's no denying that all the shit started with the multiculture.. The freedom we enjoyed before that, would be impossible to write here without people shouting "LIES!".

People accuse me of being a racist, and well. I usually say; That i am towards the mass of them. I make exceptions when and if i bump into an individual that behaves and aren't troublemakers... After travelling around and gaining experience, you notice, that people in their own countries are friendlier, than the shit that came to your country. So in a sense you become a home-racist, not that i would really choose racist as the proper term, but these days you can't complain about anything without being called racist, so i learnt to live with it... It's always a difference when you visit them in their own countries... Like i said before, we are too leniant, and foreigners tend to abuse our freedom and hospitality. Though for some reason, i never see bad behaviour from people that come from western countries.

It's all a mystery to me.

Anyway, cheers; and hope to see your scrawny ass on this side of the puddle in the near future.

lol, me too man, me too. the first thing i'd do is throw a big old bon fire party right in your backyard

i love the thought of the everyman's right law, it is almost hard to comprehend given what i'm used to here in the states. you can't even go grab a football that accidentally lands in someone's yard without catching an evil eye..

the neighborhoods here are similar to cubicles in an office which can be a bit suffocating, but at the same time it was very nice to grow up right next door to my best friend/cohort in mass mischief and destruction

I can understand your distaste for over immigration...we certainly fall victim to that here in the states, especially in the universities. In my experiences, I have found that most immigrants come here simply to reap the benefits of the society and then leave. It seems all too infrequent that they have even a mild interest in our culture/giving anything back to the places they stay. I have had plenty of classes where a foreign student will get called on to participate and won't even be able to form a sentence. I just don't see how they are passing the same tests that I a They seem to stick out like a sore thumb and not blend in or attempt to blend in at all with our culture. They are only friends with each other and make no attempt to communicate with american students. This however could be due to many reasons such as intimidation or un-acceptance, but what it seems like to me is that they only came here to benefit themselves and have no interest in any of the finer things.

I certainly don't hate them or mind them that much really, but they do seem a bit 'unnecessary' at times. for example, when i go to the gym to play basketball, often times 11 or 12 asians will walk into the gym together and play an exclusive basketball game. I guess what I'm rambling on about is that I don't understand why they don't attempt to be blend in or be a part of anything else than what they came from. Why come here in the first god damn place??

It almost seems as if man was meant to stay within the relative area in which he was born. Almost as if each race and nationality is a different species.. Right now in the states, diversity is all the rage. In every office and every school diversity is the number one promoted concept. Personally I find it kind of a fallacy, but that won't stop me from finding a place I feel I should live, rather than settle for the one I was born in..

I live pretty close to the coast if you like bonfires ... I love the sea in the summer, lots of chicks and less clothes .. Lakes are my favourite though, both at summer and winter, im a sucker for tranquillity i guess.

There's something special about lakes, especially in the evenings in august with a bonfire and a couple of beers. Not too far to Svartedalen (Black valley) from where i live either. It's a bigass natural reservation with great fishing.

http://www.kungalvsvandrarhem.se/_eng/kungalv .php

That's my hometown where i lived my whole life, i still love it. One of the oldest cities in sweden, and close to the sea/forest, and close to the second largest city in sweden and not too far to go to norway. Not too damn distant to denmark and europe. 3 Hours by boat to Copenhagen, and flights costs almost nothing... 80 bucks to london from here last i checked.

http://www.goteborg.com/default.aspx?id=528 Stockholm might be nice to visit as a foreigner, but Gothenburg is the shit

http://www.goteborg.com/templates/Page.aspx?i d=23019 Nice christmasy feeling they have put on this year i have admit too

If i can afford a ship like the old long boats when i croak, then sure. Im kind of old school through and through, and arrogantly proud of my heritage they say ... Well, i don't know. All swedes are, they just show it during footy or hockey events. If you show your pride if your nationality these days, people tend to think you're a racist lol, that's how far it gone with the immigration.

It's the very same here, and all over europe. You're just supposed to sit down and accept, if you complain or say anything that could be taken as criticism in any way to the incorporation of foreign cultures, you're either a racist or neo nazi. lol... Hitler was right though when he said that "the masses are like a herd of sheeps". Both he and stalin was against intellectuals that wasen't a member of the party... If one looks at the society today, it's the very same thing. Some questions are taboo, like multiculture. And it's unaccepteable to stand against it in any way, regardless if your oppinion is legit or just dumbass racist.

What made our countries great once, were the fact that we were bond together as a big family. These days things are increasingly getting worse, because a few irresponsible people in power has taken decisions on their own, in their semi-dictator/demoractic ways.

And their viewpoints are spread through media, and schools. So when you listen to todays youth and most people, they tend to almost quote what they've been told.

A few people have had a vision of how nice it would be if people around the world all gathered in their nations, but not to ask people who live there how they want things first seems a bit... arrogant to say the least. Not to mention that these few people are obviously also carrying around on some sort of hatred to the homogenous society... I've read alot of stories in swedish newspapers, written by obvious socialistic writers, how little worth we swedes are, and how much of a nonsense swedish history really is. And that shit is being pulled in schools as well.. lol, every attempt to make multiculture into a nice wet dream for already rootless people apparently.

The notion of a multiculture is by all means a nice idea in concept. But to apply it to a nation that has historic and cultural roots that goes back hundreds if not thousands of years.. Now that if anything, seems more racist to me, than to question the apparent suicide of ones nation.

I was just 15 when i realized how shitty things were, and these days people tend to say i was right about how i had forseen how things would look today... I have that in common with Voltaire i think, he forsaw the french revolution by just looking at the politics, peoples reactions and so on... I tend to do the same, and it may sound arrogant but i always seem to be correct with my little prophecies as well.

To me Sweden, or scandinavia for that matter is just a shadow of its former self. A foreigner will certainly see things in a completely different way, not being rooted or having growed up here. The nature and all that is fantastic, and people are pretty much the same-o. Just bereaved of national pride, and undermined cultural values... Of course some of us haven't been influenced by all that bullshit though

If there is a religious afterlife, let it be Valhalla. I'd hate the idea of a restricted nerdy heaven. Women, beer and pork seems a hell of a lot more tempting to be
