I think you're right that had he gone left, or at the very least done a bunny hop, this whole terrible incident could have been avoided.

Police motorbike riders are taught that if you’re heading for someone’s head on your motorcycle, you should try to deflate the front tyre and attach the nearest available pillows to your forks.
