Trichinosis city here we come.
If these guys are meat handlers they are supposed to know YOU DON'T EAT RAW PORK. They are required by law to clean meat grinders thoroughly when preparing ground meats. That, and sanitize all equipment before handling any other meat products. I would 'presume' this applies to blood also.
The trichinosis larva can go throughout the human body, is impossible to cure, except in it's earliest stage, and can kill you VERY painfully. The most dangerous case is worms entering the central nervous system. They cannot survive there, but they may cause enough damage to produce serious neurological deficits (such as ataxia or respiratory paralysis), and EVEN DEATH. Infestation of the heart may also lead to death.
The medication Thiabendazole can kill adult worms in the intestine; however, once it gets in the muscles there is no treatment that kills the larvae that can live only in the skeletal muscle.
Keeping pigs in clean pens with floors that can be washed (such as concrete) is the standard in Germany, where raw pork is a common delicacy and trichinosis is rarer than in the U.S. That, and not allowing hogs to eat uncooked carcasses of other animals, including rats, which may be infected with trichinosis. I'm no doctor but I was taught this in the seventh grade. Don't they teach kids ANYTHING these days?
