He didn't end up under the carpet because of smoking. He was must venturing off.

But the whole point of "smoking kills" is because if the guy didn't smoke, he wouldn't have thought the bump was his pack of cigarettes. Therefore, he wouldn't have stomped it flat.

Even though the hmaster would've died anyway (suffocation), it's all about the concept. It was pretty clever.
