After crashing in to the barrier the wheel comes off, bounces into the street and smashes somebody’s car.

While working S/F I watched a formula 1 car go that far into the air and explode like a skyrocket at its apogee. The car burned in the infield on turn 1, like an immense sparkler. I called red flag the only time in my life without waiting for the chief steward. I went to turn 1 and helped try to find any trace of the driver. (You could NOT look directly at the car for the intense light of the burning mag and aluminum.) I was standing there with several other course officials, looking at the pyre with our hearts in our stomachs, the driver came up behind us and commented "Well, I guess I'll have to get a new car."
Later he said "He was upside-down in the air, smelled gasoline, then hit his releases. The next thing he remembers is waking up in a field BEHIND the spectator stands." "I had a helliva time convincing crowd control to let me through."
He was the first american driver to use a nomex scarf across his face. All he had for burns was 4- 2nd deg. burns where his face had tiny exposure ares at the corner of his goggles. NO BRUISES! ALL that was left of the car was white ash, appx 4-5 inches at its deepest. He got another car and continued racing, but that was the end of my taking any part of racing- period.
Here's to memories May we have many more, and know when to quit when we've had enough.
